Francis Ford Coppola - Director

Dracula - 1992

  • shadow of Dracula looming in background
  • distracted of conversation '...do you believe in destiny?'
  • zoom in/POV shot to Mina's victorian photo
  • shadow on white newspaper knocks over gothic ink pot
  • spills and drips down Mina's face - links to first scene, blood and foreshadows
  • simply shows his supernatural powers
  • costume detailed and exaggerated - red cape with Dragons (army) and prosthetics show aged face (lack of blood, lack of human contact, disguise)
  • monologue: 'Do you believe in destiny? That even the powers of time can be altered for a single purpose? That the luckiest man who walks on this earth is the one who finds... true love?'
  • Shadow is its own being, strangles Jonathan unknowingly
  • close up of Dracula - light catches tear drop

Stylistic Approach:
• intense detail on costume and make up depending on narrative
• colouring to highlight emotions and foreshadow
• subtle uses of underlying hints to cause active spectatorship

link with Apocalypse Now:
• intense use of colourings to emphasise points
• both explore tragedies of a past life and how that impacts future decisions
• made after apocalypse now with an all-star cast
• parallel shots !!!!!!!!!!! like the bull and the fight with Marlon Brando heavily links to the squad burning the abbey down and Drac visiting Mina
•  likes to be accurate with time period, sticks to it but makes it his own
• very different genre yet is about its own type of journey
