Under The Skin - Beach Scene Analysis

Beach scene analysis

In attempt to capture another male victim, The Female chooses the naturalistic landscape of a Scottish pebbled beach. The lack of audio, save for the waves, creates a serene yet ominous feel to the atmosphere. The establishing shots generalise the scene, showing the normality of the situation. Then the long shot, blurring the faces of the people, is a point of view shot from The Female, showing her lack of concern for them, this is not what she’s focused on. The shot of The Female shows her to have her back to them. The camera pans until it lands on a single man in the water. From a behind shot of The Female, the camera shows her to be staring at him, the shot changing slightly to emphasis the time delay and her not moving. She is shown to be standing directly to the right of his towel, showing where he will go when he gets out of the water.

When he comes close to her, she asks if this is a good place to surf. The confusion is evident through his facial expression, and the hesitation in his dialogue. He gets distracted by the distress of a nearby problem occurring, The Female’s focus being entirely on him, as if she’s studying him. He runs to the distress, jumping in to save the man, who is closer to the shore. This shows his desperation to save someone. The long shots show the distance of The Female towards the situation, yet also reflects how helpless humanity can be towards natural situation such as this. The lack of audio, save from the waves, shows it to be a normality. The only music which takes place, is the fading in of The Female theme when approaching the surfer who is now tired on the shore after falling to save the man, the wife and the dog. The Female shows no remote in this situation, simply choosing the largest rock and graphically smashing it onto his head so he’s killed. She then drags him, the clear audio of a baby crying being heard and then a shot to show the baby in solitude crying at the lose of the family. Human instinct is to care and show empathy towards the baby, however The Female just continues on with her mission, showing her separation from humanity.
